The Problem with Trophies and Achievements

The Problem with Trophies and Achievements

Since the introduction of trophies/achievements in video games, I’ve always been less than satisfied with how the whole process works and is implemented. In my opinion, the whole idea needs a huge rethink.

When trophies/achievements first started appearing in games, I despised them, and I pretty much still do. In the past, I could play a game, enjoy it, complete it and move on to the next game on my list. Now, whenever I play a game and complete it, I then have to play the game again (or again and again …) in order to clean up the remaining trophies/achievements that I never got on the previous play through. This is something I appear to have no control over, my brain just will not let it go.

What’s even more frustrating about this whole process, is the fact that the trophies/achievements you are going back in for are either the trophies/achievements which force you to play the game again on a ridiculous difficulty setting, which ends up ruining the gaming experience for you.

Gone Home Homerunner Trophy

After finally unlocking the Homerunner trophy in Fullbright’s first-person adventure exploration game, Gone Home, I thought I would share this short video on how I managed to achieve this godforsaken trophy.

This must be the first game I have ever played where the developers have boasted that you can complete the game in less than a minute. When I first looked through the trophy list and seen this trophy, I didn’t really have very high hopes for this game. I was happily surprised though, this isn’t a bad game at all … Except for this trophy.

Let’s make no mistake, this trophy is glitchy. This trophy almost made me ‘gone insane’. I’m must have tried over twenty times before finally getting this trophy to pop.

Raise the Ruf

DriveClub - Raise the Ruf Challenge Leaderboard

Managed to get myself in the top three on the Global Leaderboard for the Raise the Ruf drifting challenge in Driveclub on the Playstation 4.

I know it is only a matter of time before someone comes along and beats my score so I thought I would capture the moment and share it while I could. The game is pretty challenging at times so needless to say, I’m pleased with that result.

Alien Isolation Review

Review: Alien Isolation

Having just completed Alien Isolation on the Playstation 4, I thought I would write a review on my gameplay experience as I have noticed a lot of people online have divided opinions towards this game.

Alien Isolation is a action-adventure survival horror story which is based 15 years after the original Alien film. You play the character of Amanda Ripley (the daughter of Ellen Ripley) who is investigating the disappearance of her mother.

The story begins with news of the discovery of the flight recorder from the Nostromo spacecraft which has been located by a ship named the Anesidora and is being held aboard Sevastopol, a remote space station in orbit around the gas giant KG348. Amanda is offered a place on this mission to recover the Nostromo flight recorder in the hope she can have closure regarding the fate of her missing mother.
